This blog was really designed for me and others in the interwebs to vent their grievances. Yes there is twitter, and facebook and formspring... and even god forbid myspace.

But this blog comes with fun facts!

Leaving the Seat Up

As a female, men leaving the seat up is one of the most major inconveniences known to me. Not only is it gross when we have to touch the underside of a toilet seat, but the sheer laziness of the previous user ensures the ire of the female toilet going world. One of the dirtiest public toilets in the world, the Lincoln Memorial Toilets (I kid you not) was riddled with upstanding seats... in a female bathroom no less
the mind boggles!

In light of this anger... have some toilet related facts.
1. The first toilet in a row is the least used, and most often cleaned
2. A person spends an average 3 years on the toilet
3. The toilet handle in a public bathroom can leave up to 40,000 germs per square inch

It seems we still may have a while to go from Sir Thomas Crapper, inventor of the toilet... who I'm sure after first use, failed to return the seat to the proper position!

Sore Feet

So I recently started a new job, I work in a supermarket as a "checkout chick" which I actually really enjoy, because I get to complain to people and make them listen as I hold their groceries hostage. One side effect of this though is really bad foot pain from long haul standing. When asking some of the more seasoned workers what they did to stop the pain, they replied "we don't." Don't think I've ever been more disappointed in an answer.

One of the most painful foot conditions, trench foot came about in the First World War with the unsanitary conditions in the trenches. Treatments included rubbing whale blubber on the feet of soldiers as a type of coating, but it was eventually found that this in fact sped up the onset of trench foot due to sweating.

It was also reported that there were cases of trench foot at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival

Might just go soak mine in a bucket of warm water!

Sleep Deprivation

Whether you're a university student spiking your coffee with red bull, or a mother with a newborn that you just can't quite believe would cry so much..sleep deprivation is experienced by everyone and it sucks. What's worse is waking up finally after you did get some sleep realising that you're still tired and the three hours isn't going to cut it. There's no rest for the wicked, or anybody else apparently.

British Ministry of Defence researchers have been able to reset soldiers' body clocks so they can go without sleep for up to 36 hrs. Tiny optical fibres embedded in special spectacles project a ring of bright white light (with a spectrum identical to a sunrise) around the edge of soldiers' retinas, fooling them into thinking they have just woken up. The system was first used on US pilots during the bombing of Kosovo.

So there is rest for some wicked people I suppose

Mouth Ulcers and Canker Sores

This week, I happened to discover a ghastly canker sore in my mouth. I do believe mouth ulcer and canker sores are the most inconvenient infections. I've never had canker sores before, so I freaked out thinking it was some sort of tumour. In reality mouth ulcers and canker sores are non-contagious, and can be caused by a multitude of factors. What I'm angry at right now is my inability to eat, sleep or smile because of the tiny pulsating glob on my lip.

In fact, canker sores are very common affecting nearly 20% of the population. They are more common in young adults and teens. It's not uncommon to find canker sores in the mouths of teens under immense exam stress. Women are more likely than men to get them. Some home remedies include a milk of magnesia solution, teabags placed on the lip or a 'swish and spit' salt solution. At the end of the day there is no cure for them, so you just have to suffer for the 2 weeks they take to disappear. Just great!

Fragment Consider Revising

A phrase annoying as the little word paper clip himself. Fragment Consider Revising has plagued word documents for years. What's worse is that fragment consider revising is only a mere suggestion by the helpful word therefore, even when you continue to ignore his most helpful suggestions he'll just keep offering the same advice, with no real explanation as to what the grammatical offence is.

It typically means that you are missing the noun subject of a sentence or the verb. It will also come up if an offending sentence is a just a clause, e.g. "If the boy were walking his dog". It will also show up if a sentence is too wordy with lots of parenthetical expressions without the proper use of commas, semicolons, colons , etc

Queuing

Now this is a common grievance, i know this to be true because everyone knows it to be true like the sky is blue and grass is green. Queues especially anger people because of what they represent. The most common being that here you are queuing for commonly a bank or post office to access a service that inevitably you have or will have to pay for. The Catch 22 of our daily lives. Queues represent time wasted, that society has deemed necessary to run our day to day lives.

Photobucket

People waste more than 5 months of their lives queuing.

On average the Brit will wait in line at the bank or post office for 27 minutes each month, and even queuing at cash machines wastes almost 25 minutes a month. Just reading the statistics is enough to make you angry!

Late Public Transport

Wherever you are in the world, whether it be bus train tram or even a tuk tuk no one likes standing out in the elements waiting for that train or bus that should've arrived 4 minutes ago. Public transport grievances have been staple conversations for many generation and continues to be one of the many things that we can neither live with nor without.

About 60 billion passenger journeys were made by public transport in 2008 in the EU-27. This figure refers to local public transport, including urban, suburban and regional public transport services. Considering the total EU population, this represents about 120 public transport journeys per inhabitant per year. Demand for public transport is not distributed evenly across the European territory. For instance, in the medium and large sized cities included in the Mobility in Cities Database, the number of public transport journeys was about 300 per inhabitant per year.
